Chelsea on "Racial Justice Training"

Two weeks ago, three Groundwork Somerville staff members and one of our partners from Cambridge Health Alliance attended a Racial Justice Training in Boston. In a dynamic two days, we talked about racial differences in our own lives and communities, as well as how we can create a more equitable and sustainable Somerville.

We spent time talking about how differences in people's health come from the unfair ways that resources, power, and opportunities are spread out. This unfair imbalance in things like life expectancy, infant mortality, the prevalency of disease, and ability to treat disease is called health inequity.

A lot of the time, people think of racism as individual prejudice. However, because of generations of discrimination and racial inequality, sometimes the very way society is structured is unfair, in ways that not everyone notices, just because it feels like the "norm".

Some things in our enviroment that are not good for our health include nearby highways or contaminated sites, places where buses idle, dangerous street crossings, street layouts that make getting around only accessible by car, and places where unhealthy food is much cheaper and easier to get than fresh food.
Some things in our environment that are good for our health include nearby access to fresh, healthy, affordable food, streets that make it safe and easy to get around the city by walking, biking, or another method of exercise, having jobs that allow us to take care of our basic needs, and having appropriate health care.

What are some other things you can add to these two lists?
Which neighborhoods in Somerville do you think of in relation to things that are good for our health, and which neighborhoods in Somerville do you think of in relation to things that are NOT good for our health?
How would you describe the racial makeup of the neighborhoods you thought of in terms of healthy and unhealthy places in Somerville?

I hope you're still in the giving mood- I know the schools i.e Prospect Hill Academy can always use volunteers for their school events. Also, the local hospitals may need help with the extra winter patient traffic. Great efforts, keep up the good work!!!

Another cool idea is to consider registering as a bone marrow donor. Give the gift of life! Bone marrow donors are desperately needed, and to join the registry all you have to do is a quick, painless cheek swab. Our partner Cambridge Health Alliance is hosting a drive in January. Any questions about joining the registry can be found here: http://www.marrow.org/index.html

And the specifics about the drive are here:

National Marrow Donor Program Northeast District
Telephone Number: 877-601-1926Ext. 7723
Drive Name: MA / Cambridge Health Alliance
Drive Location:

I've done so many great things with groundwork and learned so much-- carpentry, timberframing, composting, gardening, biking safely, and much more. In all these instances people have taken their time and patience to help me in these experiences that are new to me. Now that were in the season that focusses on giving back im inspired to give my help and time to a worthy cause the same way so many others have done for me. Does anyone know of places that could use a helping hand for the holidays?

Hey my name is chada mateo im the assistant supervisor for the Somerville Greenteam. Im going to be writing about a workshop we attended this past sat. its called the Food Project and basically it was teaching us about were our food comes from and what the process of shipment is,how we take our food for granted, how our food travles, the energy it takes, what type of things people do to stock the food markets and the sacrifices they take to make a living. This was a great opportunity to learn from an inspirational group of staff and teens about their work in Boston, MA and look at how it can inspire new approaches in your own organization. The training teached how to best engage teens in:

- Food justice education
- Building raised bed gardens with neighborhood residents
- Keeping teens involved throughout the year in food system work
- Bridging race, class divides among teens
- Finding powerful approaches to youth-adult partnerships
- Teaching youth how to grow their own

CCP on "Community Corridor Planning Meeting THIS Thursday!"

Hey folks! In case you haven't heard, CCP (or Community Corridor Planning) is hosting a HUGE gathering this Thursday, December 2nd at the Capuano School (150 Glen Street, Somerville) from 6:30-8:30pm.

WHY? We need you - your ideas, your thoughts, your interests, your concerns, your hopes, your fears...your everything.

You see, the Green Line is being extended through Somerville around 2015. Sounds great, right? Well it IS great. The concerns that we have however, are that without community voice, the development that happens along the Green Line Extension won't be all good. Prices could go up: local, independently owned businesses will not be able to afford rent/taxes; home owners will need to relocate; renters will need to move to a more affordable community. Green Space and Active Transit options could be discarded, and instead more pavement, car parking, and unsustainable development options could be chosen.

We want a beautiful, fun, hip, affordable, quirky, locally-owned, green, sustainable, tree-lined, diverse community - like the one we have now - once the Green Line comes. Are you with us? If so, come to our meeting!
